lecture on model making, lecturer John Lee
John Lee Model Making
John lee is an industry professional prop maker and set builder, they way he found himself into the industry is by networking, and met with the people who worked on the films he loved (he would watch all the way to credits to research the people ).
One of the films he worked on was Charlie and the chocolate factory, surprisingly a lot of things I didn’t relise were prop models, for example the doll hospital and Charlie’s home town, and the exterior of the chocolate factory building, which was feet high.
He tipped us that’s you should;
▪️only build what you will see in the film, for example only doing two
sides of a building, Many as fifty people work on a sculpture and it takes months to create. hence the less to make, the more money and time less spent.
▪️ Props are never stuck together, so that they are easy to brake down. It has to be collapsible and rebuildable.
John lee also worked on the John Lewis Christmas advert of 2013, featuring the bear and the hare. Shockingly I thought this was an 2d animation on perhaps CG background, but in fact it is all maninly stop motion. The characters that look 2d hand drawn traditional, are in fact laser cut mdf drawings created from a famous Disney animator. The wood is set up on a hidden rig, on a set built up by models.
He’s almost worked on frankinweenie, and Thomas the tank engin. His models are impressive, with out the information revealed I would have never believed they were models. With in the cinematic world, the models create perfect illusion of real life. What I found most impressive was the different materials that are used that trick the viewer to think the have a different texture/ weight, something that is light and soft and can have the illusion of something heavy and brick like, or something as simple as cling film an look like water ripples.
After this lecture I am outstanding by the amazing possibilities, and very inspired for the creation of my animation puppet.
